MAIL FROM OUR GUESTS AT MYC
---------------------------
Hello, I found your fascinating web site earlier last year, when looking for information on the Hwylfa Ddu Hughes family.
Yes, I'm related to them, as are many others apparently!
My grandfather was born and raised on the farm, before joining the army and serving in France in WWI. Though a lot of us were born in Wales, most of his branch of the tree are scattered about now, many of us in Canada. However, we still take an interest in our heritage and keep the family connections as close as possible.
Your site has been so informative for us and we enjoy looking through, hoping to come across pertinent information to further our knowledge of the family's heritage. The photos and imagery are stirring, brings home to Canada the familiar home of Wales.
If anyone has information to share on our "tribe" please do so. Diolch yn fawr iawn.
Hwyl, Lynne - ar' arfordir gorllewin, Canada.
Lynne told us later: As a little girl, I'd hear my grandparents talk of his relatives and their friends in the Llanrwst area. Most I didn't know. "Tom, Melin Y Coed" is one name I recall, but there were others.
I've a scanned in photo of my grandfather as teenager in his WWI uniform and another, on post card of him, when he was a bit older, in his tux, as he was a singer. I'll see what can be done about scanning that one. Sepia toned!
I'm trying to see if any of the Hughes gang moved to Patagonia, as I know a gentleman here, of Welsh descent, whose North Walian ancestor went to Y Wladfa, then came to Saskatchewan. I've lived in Ontario, as well as the West Coast.
And here is the photo of Lynne's Grandfather, about which she says:
This is a photo of my late grandfather, Morris Lloyd Hughes, of Hwylfa Ddu, in WWI uniform, at 16 or 17 years old. Unsure of the exact date it was taken, but he signed up to fight at the age of 16.
Dear Researchers,
I have just had a most enjoyable time looking at your excellent web site. Thank you for giving us all the chance to see part of the Conwy valley in such detail.
Could I beg a favour of you?
It appears probable that my family lived in the Llanrwst area before migrating to the Vale of Clwyd. The two generations I have discovered in the Llanrwst area are Ellis Evan (b. c.1673) who married Jane Parry (b. c. 1673) (married in Llanrwst?). They had a son Evan (b. 1703 in De Nant, Betws y Coed and baptized in Llanrwst 6 Jun 1703 bur. Llanrwst 3 Nov 1793) who married Lowry Owen in Llanrwst 19 May 1740. She was born c. 1719 in Llanrwst. They had nine children: Owen, Mary, Robert, Ellin, John, William, Alice, John and a second Owen.
Three of their children are recorded as born in Maethebrwd.
I gather from your web site that Maethebrwb (now a census area) was never a particular place but rather an area on the east of Llanrwst, am I right?
William married a Mary Owen in Llanrwst on 22 Aug 1770 and some time after this he and Mary and his mother Lowry migrated to the Vale of Clwyd.
I wonder if in your researches you have come across any of these ancestors of mine in connexion with any of the places I have found them to be connected with. I don't suppose that my luck will stretch that far, but can tell me where De Nant is or was? And throw a little more light for me on Maethebrwd?
Yours sincerely,
Anthony Evans.

(Lori Rulison and Eric Dodman are planning to cross the Atlantic to visit Melin y Coed and environs in 2008 to further investigate the family history.)
From Lori Rulison, NY USA:
I have been doing a bit of searching this week and
REreading for the hundredth time the census listings for MYC. I'm still looking for some bit of connection to my Williams family. I think I have found something that looks very promising as a lead. . .
I know from the 1871 census that my great great grandparents were living at Ysgoldy -- listed as Henysgoldy at that time -- They are Thomas Williams 28, servant with his wife Elizabeth (Jones)30, and their children Robert, 8, student (my Great Grandfather,) Catherine,6, Mary, 4,and Ellen, 6 months.
I haven't been able to get further back than that until today when in reading through the 1861 census. I found you listed at Bryn Dyffryn an Elizabeth Jones, 21, housemaid of Penmachno and Thomas Williams, 18, groom, of Maenan. These would be the right ages for them, they are together at the same location and Ysgoldy is just the next house down the road from Bryn Dyffryn which seems to make sense if they are there 10 years later! Any ideas who to ask for more information about Bryn Dyffryn or where to look for church marriage records from that area -- They must have married at least by 1863 if they have a son Robert 8yrs old in 1871.
I am making plans now for my visit to Melin y Coed in June and hoping to find some more information before I get there. Thanks so much for the TERRIFIC Melin y Coed web site and all the wonderful information and photos. I so look forward to the continued updates etc.
I think we should arrange one BIG Melin y Coed family reunion so all of us who have posted info on the web site and have family connections could gather, meet one another, and share information! Doesn't that sound like a fun time!

From TONY in WHITE ROCK, BC, Canada:
I thought that one of your MIs, shown below, might be one of mine
because of the reference to Bryn Hyfryd but I now suspect that this is
not the one my Owen Roberts b.1846/7, built in Nebo, opposite the one
you describe as Bryn Bras bach in the website.
I took a photo of this Bryn Bras bach this summer and the stone over its front door says R.Roberts 1895. This R.Roberts could be Robert Roberts b.1814?, Owen's father, or else it might be his son, Robert O. Roberts b.1871, who married Mary Ann? Edwards of Nant y Rhiw and took their son Ifor Allen b.about 1900 to Remsen, Utica, NewYork in 1913 on the ship 'Celtic'.
The house west of this Bryn Hyfryd bach is called Bryn Tawel and I understand that all three houses were built about the same time and originally looked the same, before they were modified.
I wonder if my Roberts family built them all. I'd love to see all their deeds. I wonder what the 1901 census says about their resident families?
There is a small cottage sandwiched between Bryn Tawel and Bryn Bras, looking a bit like an old farm outbuilding across the yard from Bryn Tawel. This may be the spot where the old Bryn Bras bach used to be before it was demolished and replaced sometime after WW2 - as the elderly lady in the present BrynBras told me several years ago.

Might the above be the other BrynHyfred that you found somewhere the
other side of Capel Garmon.
Your website listing of Capel Garmon Roberts families seems to miss out
all of my own family from BrynBras, Nebo.
I wonder if the wife of Owen's Roberts b.1846/7 (my Grandad's
mother) Margaret Jones, daughter of John Jones, joiner living at
Graig Goch Nebo in 1868, was related to the Jones' living nearby at Bryn Esgob and Orseddwen Fawr in the census of 1861.
Cheers, Tony back in White Rock, BC

--------- LOOKING FOR JOSEPH DAVIES, TAN PISTYLL ---------
Thank you for the interesting web page. Tom Davies, Bryniog told me of it. He and I are long lost relatives going back to Joseph Davies, Tan Pistyll, Penmachno. Have you any details of him?
Joseph Davies was my great, great grandfather and my great grandfather moved to Penmaenmawr to work in the quarries. I have details about my grandfather in Pen about 1840. I'll try and get the dates for Joseph Davies Tan Pisyll, but Joseph and John are often found in the family - possibly more in the Penmachno area, but as Tom Davies, Bryniog is a long lost relative, I though I try and find out more. Geraint Hughes.
Geraint Hughes (Rev) - my mother was a Davies.
------------TY MAWR AND TWM O'R NANT CONNECTION -------
A treat in store! Eric Dodman in Canada and Enid Williams in Wales are working on their family history, which may be of help and interest to many family researchers who visit this site. As a taste of the excitement of discovery, here is a selection of Eric's mail and its local connections:
First let me try and explain about my family tree, then summarise the connection to Ty Mawr.
Firstly, the main line that I am following is Edwards of Llanrwst
c1760 John Edwards = c 1760 Mary Ellis
1785 Thomas Edwards = 1791 Elizabeth Davies
1827 Edward Edwards = 1836 Jane Jones
1878 Sarah Edwards =
Eric Dodman is a grandson of Sarah Edwards, and Enid Williams is a grand-daughter of Sarah's elder sister Jane Anne.
John Edwards 1760 was a cousin of bard Twm o'r Nant (Thomas Edwards) 1739-1810
Edward Edwards 1827 was a brother of poet Meiriadog (John Edwards) 1814-1906
The connection to John Evans is via Elizabeth Davies
1714 John Evans = ?
c1760 Mary Evans = David Davies
1791 Elizabeth Davis = Thomas Edwards
In 2004, two gravestones were found by my 2nd cousin Enid Williams in Llanrwst, and they are located at what used to be the Bethel chapel but is now a guide hut! The gravestones are vertical against the wall and the land has been paved over for parking.
The first gravestone is for Thomas and Elizabeth Edwards above and also shows Mary Anne Evans. We have her as the grand-daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Edwards but have not yet figured out how she became Evans. She may be connected to John Evans.
The second gravestone is for John Evans (no wife) but also shows a number of couples surname Jones, and it also shows the places where they lived
- Pen Y Garth Llanddoget
- Nant Farm Llanddoget
- New Inn
- Ty Mawr Llanrwst
All except New Inn (confirmed by Patricia) still exist, and in June this year we visited Pen Y Garth and Nant Farm. The original farmhouse at Pen Y Garth has gone but that at Nant Farm looks original but much extended. Funny that the current occupant of Nant Farm is Hywel Jones Coal Merchant. We did not have enough time to try and find Ty Mawr but will try and get there in 2008.
According to the second gravestone, Lewis and Catherine Jones both died at Ty Mawr, and when I looked in the Census I found the family at Ty Mawr from 1861 through to 1901. William O Jones was a grandson and would appear to be the same one that is mentioned on your documents.
Now, what I don't yet know is how all the Jones mentioned on the gravestone are related to John Evans. The most obvious thing is that John had a daughter who married a Jones and that the Jones line then continued but as every 3rd person in Wales is called Jones all could be by marriage. However, either way they are rellies!!
................
William O Jones purchased Ty Mawr, and he had lived there with his parents and siblings since his birth in 1876. William's parents were David E and Elizabeth E Jones (nee Roberts?), and his grandparents were Lewis and Catherine Jones (nee Davies?). This Jones family have been located living at Ty Mawr in all Census from 1861 through to 1901,
and in 1851 they resided at Little Bridge Street in Llanrwst where Lewis was an Innkeeper. Perhaps this was the New Inn mentioned on the gravestone?
.................
You will see from the Census that Lewis Jones died between 1871 and 1881 and it turns out that he and wife Catherine who died just after the 1901 Census are buried at the Bethel chapel in Llanrwst
The relationship of all the other Jones' to Lewis and Cathine Jones is not yet known, but we do know something about John Evans
John Evans was the father of Mary Evans who married David Davies, and
David and Mary's daughter Elizabeth married Thomas Edwards. Both Thomas and Elizabeth are also buried at Bethel Chapel next to John Evans
Thomas and Elizabeth Edwards had many children, and the eldest son John became better known as Meiriadog who won the Bard's Chair at the 1892 Powys Eisteddfod
The relationship of John Edwards to John Evans (and more) can be found in the book Cymru by O M Edwards Vol 3 1892
John Edwards left Llanrwst around 1841 to marry Elizabeth Watkins and spent much of his life in Llanfair Caereinion where he and wife Elizabeth are buried.
....................
I ignored your earlier email which mentioned New Inn because there was nothing new in it for me
- I had seen the BBC site and the letter posted by Claire
- I had confirmed that there is a New Inn on Denbigh Street today
I had two problems
1. No way of contacting Claire directly - all I could do was place another message on the BBC site and hope that Claire reads it
2. No way of knowing if today's New Inn is the same New Inn that was run by Samuel Jones prior to his death in 1831, and which may have ben run by his wife Elizabeth until she died in 1838.
Apologies for my lack of response as your second email caused a light to go on!!! I remembered that I have a CD of N Wales Directories and that there are many entries for Llanrwst
1828 shows Samuel Jones at New Inn (no street, but almost certainly as below)
1834 and later shows John Jones at New Inn Denbigh (or Denby!) Street
Samuel died in 1831 so above lines up
1844 Lewis Jones at Blue Lion Market Place
1850 Lewis Jones at Boars Head Little Bridge Street!! (lines up with 1851 Census)
No trace of Lewis Jones Innkeeper in 1856
I also found Lewis Jones Farmer at Ty Mawr in 1874, 1876, then David Jones 1883, missing in 1886, 1889, 1895.
I also found our gg-grandfather Thomas Edwards under Curriers in 1828, but for some reason he does not appear after that year
So thanks for prompting me re New Inn
Eric
I have just received the 1841 marriage certificate of Lewis Jones and discovered that the maiden name of wife Catherine was Davies, and that Catherine's father was David Davies.
David Davies was the brother Elizabeth Davies who married my
gg-grandfather Thomas Edwards, so Catherine was a 1st cousin of my
gg-grandfather Edward Edwards etc
Common ancestors David Davies = Mary Evans
Mine
Jones
Siblings: Elizabeth Davies = Thomas Edwards
David Davies = Unknown
1st cousins: Edward Edwards
Catherine Davies = Lewis Jones
2nd cousins: Sarah Edwards = Frank Morgan
David E Jones = Elizabeth E Roberts
William O Jones = 4th cousins: Eric Dodman = Unknown Jones =
Maybe I will find a 4th cousin once or twice removed!!
I'll try and find time to draft the whole story from W O
Jones back to John Evans, John Edwards, Twm O'r Nant etc.
Our William Owen Jones married Anne Jones in 1902. I could not find Anne in 1901 but I found the family in 1881 with 100% certainty because they were living at the same house. Also got her mother's maiden name of Edwards for free.
I found out that the pub where Lewis was in 1851 was the Boars
Head so did a google search and came up with a note about it from Patricia on the CLWYD mailing list.
Right now I am giving Patricia the same story as I gave to you and will be buying a copy of the book on Scotland Street
Eric
.....................
I just got the 1844 MC for gg-uncle David Edwards who married a Mary Jones at Capel Garmon, and her address was given as Pant Y Maes. Of course when I googled for it, the only thing that came up was your reference and photos of the ruin, so maybe you can tell me more about it?
What hamlet, parish would Pant Y Maes be listed as in Census as I can't find Mary Jones and family under Llanrwst.
I looked further down my google results for Pant Y Maes and it was on your Melin Y Coed site where you have Census data (from 1841 I think), but I could not see a Mary Jones of the right age. I have Mary age 26 in 1851 and age 36 in 1861, so I would expect her to be age 16 in 1841. As her father was William Williams she may have been listed as Mary Williams if living at home..........
I'll take another look in 1841 but Mary Jones may be difficult to find because her (step?) father was William Williams, and witnesses Peter Williams and Catherine Williams possibly (step?) siblings.
Note that the MC puts Capel Garmon in Parish of Llanrwst
....................
Enid and I think that Elinor died in childbirth in Q4 1837 and that the
child died with her.
She was shown as minor on the 1837 MC so would be under 21 (and maybe as young as 16?)
Enid and I deciphered the addresses
For Lewis...............Gwern Howel, parish of Corwen
For Catherine..........Caer Brychiad, presumably Llanrwst, but when I
googled for Caer Brychiad I found a reference to it being in Llanddoget and also got linked to all those burials at Cae'r Brychiad on your Melin-y-Coed site
www.melin-y-coed.co.uk/page36.htm.
Where exactly is Cae'r Brychiad?
Note also that the marriage was at Capel Garmon, with witness Mary Davies likely to be Catherine's sister, that both father's were farmers, and that Lewis's father was John Ellis. Not sure if it is one of those patronyms, or if Lewis was the illegitimate son of Miss Jones who later married John Ellis
I have received the MC for Lewis Jones in Aug 1837 - I have not had one this far back.
This Lewis is ours (right father), and the writing is wonderful, but names are too common to do further searching.
So, where is the church located in Ysptty Ifan, and where is Pentrefelyn?
(Above extracts from a number of emails from Eric Dodman, shown here with his permission while awaiting a final write-up of the history).

May I congratulate you on the excellent Ty Mawr website -
full of information and wonderful photos, old and new.
I was brought up with the knowledge that my family was related to Twm o'r Nant, but no-one explained how, and I wasn't interested enough when I was young to ask!! When I started this genealogy business, I determind to find out how. I eventually found that my great grandfather, Thomas, had an elder brother, John, who was another bard (bardic name Meiriadog), and following this link, I contacted the Archives at Caernarfon, and was sent a copy of an article by O. M. Edwards about Meiriadog. In this it stated that Meiriadog's grandfather (another John) was a cousin to Twm o'r Nant. I'm
afraid we can't get any nearer than that at the moment, but, at least, that is down in black and white!
About the MIs that Eric mentions, a friend and I are currently recording the monumental inscriptions on all the cemeteries in the Bala area (my maternal grandfather was from Bala). We've been doing this for some years, and Hefin was involved with us up to the summer before he died. We're in the middle of one at the moment which we hope to finish when we get another reasonable day weatherwise. We've had so much rain this summer, which has held us up considerably! We have another two to do in that area, then we'll have to decide where we go next.
I then type it all up and the Gwynedd FHS brings them out in book form and fiche. We include a photo of the relevant church or chapel in each book, or, if it's a non-denominational cemetery, a photo of the grave of anyone famous buried there. Visual aids! It's all very enjoyable and gets us out in the fresh air!
Regards,
Enid.

Hi!
Great web site! I loved looking at the old photos.
My step grandmother lived in No. 1 in what I call Pentre [past the mill]. My grandad had a small shed there and he would do some carpentry there, so I was told. Unfortunately I don't remember his name but he married Morfudd, then she became Jones. My father's name was Glyn and he was originally from Nant y Rhiw, but I don't know what his address was there. He married my mother Margaret better know as Megan.
My grandmother moved from the old Pentre to No 1 in the village, one of the new bungalows. We lived at 9 Maelgwyn, Maes y Felin.
I have two sisters, Gwyneth and Glenys. If anyone has any more information about my grandad I would be ever so grateful
Seeing some photos brought me some very happy memories.

Although Eirlys has not given any approximate dates, we may have already found some helpful information. Glyn Jones, son of William Jones, used to live at Ty Capel, Nant y Rhiw. His step mother moved down to Melin y Coed some 70 years ago. And we may already have a photo of Eirlys' grandfather on our Friends and Neighbours page. There is an unidentified photo of a man and child by a gate. We think this might be Glyn Jones, and that he was famous for making farm gates. His workshop was past the cottages towards Ty Newydd as the road bends left up to Bryniog Isa and Bryniog Plas. It was on the right hand corner.
Can anyone confirm this or add further details for Eirlys?

Thank you so much for a really wonderful glimpse into Melin y Coed! My family were from that area. I am interested in finding out more information about them and knowing if I still have any living relatives in the area.
My great great grandfather was Thomas Williams, b. 1843. He married Elizabeth Jones b. 1841. They lived at Ysgoldy and the gatekeepers cottage at Cyffdy. They are buried in the old St. Mary's Cemetery at Llanrwst. He died Oct. 1906 and she died July 1899. They had 4 (possibly 6) children -- Robert (my great grandfather) b. 1863
Catherine b. 1865
Mary b. 1867
Ellen b. 1870
I don't know much more about them but would love to find someone who does!

A good site and I can plainly see that a lot of effort has gone into the reaserch and making of it. I also appreciate the broadcasting of the area. The negative I feel, of which I feel must be said, is that it appears to be stereotyped from the view of an 'English man with a summer home'. I know that you are residents in Melin y Coed, and really I can not blame this view of yours. But I would like to emphasis that this is a Welsh rural community, and that we will strive to keep it that way. Not to suggest that we will out every forigner, but anyone moving here must appreciate where there moving to. Perhaps a page on the Welsh importance of the Llanrwst area would be good, in the days of Llywelyn Fawr etc, and how Owain Glyndwr's first army came from this area. "Cymru Lloegr a Llanrwst" is another important part of history. Today events such as "Llanast Llanrwst" are big social events and should be given a voice as well as promoted. Again I wish to thank you for you'r effort, and please view my message as productive critism. All the best.

My great great grandfather was Thomas Williams, b. 1843. He married Elizabeth Jones b. 1841. They lived at Ysgoldy and the gatekeepers cottage at Cyffdy. They are buried in the old St. Mary's Cemetery at Llanrwst. He died Oct. 1906 and she died July 1899. They had 4 (possibly 6) children -- Robert (my great grandfather) b. 1863
Catherine b. 1865
Mary b. 1867
Ellen b. 1870
I don't know much more about them but would love to find someone who does!
Comment: Since this first contact Lori has provided information and photos which may be seen on the page "Roots: Cyffdy - Williams".
