Passed away on the morning of Sunday, 27 November 2011, after a short spell in hospital, Ms Audrey Williams of Tyn Twll, Nant y Rhiw, was most recently resident in Llanrwst. Sympathy to all her family from those who remember her over her lifetime. Audrey was the daughter of Emily and Idwal Williams, and sister to Gwyneth. Emily's parents were Eunice Lois (Edwards, Tyddyn Du) and John Owen Jones who at one time lived at Bryn Fawnog; their other children were Owen, Lizzie Jane and David.

It has been a very sad time recently for the family of the late Mary and William Roberts of Bod Wylim. In a short space of time three family members passed away, a son, a daughter and a son in law.

Robert Hugh Roberts (Bob Bont) of Pen y Bont, passed away 4 July 2011 aged 86. Dear husband of Nance, father of Garry, Karen and Nigel. Laid to rest in Llangernyw 13 July 2011.

Thomas Arfon Evans, husband of Edna and father of David and Marie passed away July 12th 2011, aged 83, and was laid to rest in Llanfairtalhaiarn.

Margaret Elizabeth Jones, daughter of Mary and Wil, passed away July 18, 2011, aged 90 years. She was the wife of the late David John Jones and mother of William, Eifion and Eirlys, and a loving grandmother and great grandmother.

Above: David John and Margaret Elizabeth.

Sister in Law Janet Roberts said: "They all had a lovely funeral as funerals go. Bob was private for the family only. There was a very good turn out for Mag and the singing was wonderful as members of the Maelgwyn Male Voice Choir was in the congregation. The chapel was full. The same also for Tom."

Sympathy to all the family, especially Edna, who lost her husband, brother and sister in such a short space of time.

ABOUT THIS WEBSITE

Above: The village of Melin-y-Coed c. 1876

This website has been set up to focus on the village of Melin-y-Coed in the Conway Valley and the surrounding rural area.

The village lies a little south of Llanrwst, the local market town, but is off the beaten track.

Once past the last turnoff before the village, every road you choose will take you to "y topiau", the tops, the high ground of the Hiraethog running from the Carmel area through to Nebo and beyond.

Above: A local wag rearranges the front page of the local community paper to reflect his impression of our wide-ranging interest in the vicinity. All parts of the valley and the tops are dear to us.

We have pages dedicated to the homes and gardens in the village and on the tops, roaming the tops, life today, life yesterday, old houses, old photos, old weddings and news cuttings, family and local history, aerial views, the Llanrwst Show, the Livestock Market, overseas descendants of families of MYC and the tops, and even people we can't identify (though we hope you can!).
New pages are added regularly.

Above: The gate to Ty Uchaf.

We invite all with a connection to Melin-y-Coed and the tops to contribute stories, photographs, news items, art work and song.

We leave it to other specialised websites to concentrate on Llanrwst, the Conway Valley, and the wider subject of North Wales.

Anyone with a connection to or interest in Melin-y-Coed and the surrounding rural areas is welcome, whether to browse or to contribute. Contact details below.

VISITORS AND NEIGHBOURS - please let us know you came today!

LANGUAGE:
Contributions in Welsh or any other language are welcome (translations are also welcome).
The working language of the site is English in order to be accessible to visitors world wide.

POETRY
We are very proud to be able to present four of the elegaic poems of Mr Thomas Williams of Gorsedd Grucyn, whose bardic name was "Grucyn". These are to be found on "Pennillion Thomas Williams". For these we are indebted to the late Mr Phillip Williams of Melin y Coed, a descendant of Thomas Williams, and the relative to whom he entrusted them, Mr Ken Davies, who has transcribed them for us.

MYC AR WASGAR - MYC ABROAD

On this website you will find photos and stories of people from Melin-y-Coed and their descendants; some have moved to America, Canada, Patagonia, the West Indies, Australia, New Zealand, and other parts of the world.

We love to hear from them or their descendants and publish their stories and photos.
See our "Roots" pages for these historical stories, as well as updates on "Friends and Neighbours".

FAMILY HISTORY RESEARCHERS:
A Window on the Past via the census returns is sure to be of interest to you.

For notes of Births, Marriages and Deaths, look at "Old News BMD".

Also look at the sites "Roots" which showcase the research of descendants of expatriate locals and "Gorsedd Grucyn", which presents family history and stories thanks to the work of Rhianwen Roberts, Ken Davies, and the late Phillip Williams of Melin y Coed.

"Fronwen" features the families who lived in this whitewashed stone cottage near the top of the Hiraethog slopes, the whitewashed frontage of which used to be visible near the skyline when one stood on the Llanrwst Bridge.

Hendre House, Cyffdy, Tyddyn Gilbert, Bryniog Isaf, Pen Ucha'r Gwyllt, Bethel and Ty Mawr, are among the homes already written about on this website.

Above: The Mill at Melin-y-Coed c. 1876

This painting shows the chapel and the western side of the mill with the mill pond.

We thank Wyn and Sylvia of Bryniog Isaf for permission to photograph and use the above paintings of Melin y Coed in the nineteenth century.

Wyn's great grandfather owned the mill and lived at Mill Bank when it was a single house, not divided into two dwellings as it is now. Wyn's grandfather was a harp maker as well as a miller.

He imported oats from Ireland and exported harps to Ireland.
He also donated timber from his land to build the chapel's roof, floors, and pews.

The painting at the top shows Highgate cottage on the hilltop on the left and the row of cottages near the mill, numbered 1 to 7 in those days, not named as they were later.
A gap in the cottages was formed when one cottage was burnt down.
The cottages were owned by the mill owner and rented to the workers as tied houses.

In the 1700s Melin-y-Coed consisted of the mill, Mill Bank house, the seven cottages, Ty Newydd and the outlying farms, as well as Cyffdy Hall.

Please visit our page "The Mill" dedicated to the mill at Melin-y-Coed.

Above: The Village of Melin-y-Coed (Mill in the Trees) as it is today.

Cyffdy dates back to 1596. We have a page dedicated to Cyffdy Hall on the site.

Other buildings such as farms and dwellings, and the mill which gives the village its name, date from the 1700s.

This photo shows the mill converted to a dwelling.

There are an estimated 140 dwellings and farms in the Melin-y-Coed area nowadays.

Above: Bont y Clwt as it was in April 1967, when it was the home of Hywel (in picture) and Sally Jackson.

Many years before, it was the home of Anne who moved to Penuchargwyllt. The estate which stands there now was called Cae'r Berllan because it was built on the orchard.

Photo: Sent to Melin-y-Coed by Ken Davies (Gorsedd Grycun descendant) and originally owned by Mrs Alwenna Evans.
Many thanks for this little time capsule.

Above: Ty Mawr is on higher ground to the south of the village.
See the Ty Mawr page for more photos.

But for Bethel Chapel, Melin-y-Coed would have remained a hamlet.
See the page devoted to Bethel Chapel.

There is no evidence to date that there was ever a public house in the village.

NAME OF VILLAGE IN 1800

According to a survey conducted in 1800 for a map printed over thirty years later, the village was then called "Pentre y Coed".
Some of the place names on that map were slightly different to today's, for instance:

Careg Groes
Poethwol (Poeth Foel, often written Porth Foel)
Llwyn Gronw
Llety Drw (Llety Dryw, Wren's Lodging)
Pennant y Bribwll (now Priddbwll, "earth pit", a trap for wolves)
Orsedd Grychyn
Moel Hogan (Maelogen)
Pwll Mawnin (mawn=peat, peat pool) Pwll Monyn.
Cae Melwyr
Garth y Pegau
Ty'n y Twll
Cwmin Gaer (Gwninger?)
[Cummin (spice); Cwmin (common, land)
cwninger - rabbit warren, coneygar.
Cwnin gaer - reformation of word supposing that it means rabbit fortress (cwning+caer with soft mutation).]

Where is "Mathebrwd / Maethebrwd"?

Mathebrwd covers 2 districts on census, Llanrwst N04 and N05.

The area in 4 is:
'Dyffryn Aur, hamlet of Tafarn y Fedw, 8 houses, Tynycauau, Cerniach, Tai Candryll, Rhydlechog, Ty'n y Ffordd Bach Ty Capel Carmel, Rhydloyw, 2 house, Brynsyllty, Coed y Brain, Garthyrhwylbren, Poethfoel, Gwern Rhisgl - 2 house -Ty Newydd, Bryn Dyffryn, Coed Bryn Dyffryn, Coed Llydan Isa, Pont y Clwt, Garth y Foel and Gwyllt Isa.'

District 5:
'Part of the Township of Mathebrwd' lies to the east of Pennant, Rhydlechog, Henblas and Cefn Coch and that part of the township of Mathebrwd that lies to the east of the road leading from Bethel Chapel to Farmyard Tollgate.'

We have a couple of Family History questions that local visitors might be able to shed light on, one with a Blackwall connection and the other with a Cyffdy connection. Also, an observation on traditional woven wool blankets from an expert on page "Wool in History".

First an interesting query from Judith Mair in North London:

This week I received a death certificate of a Mary Ann Griffith, who lived at Henar (sp? difficult to read!) House, Denbigh Street, Llanrwst in 1854. Looking her up in the 1851 census she is living there with her mother, Elizabeth Hughes, widow, aged 71, born 1780 Llanllyfni, Land proprietor, and John Robert Griffith, aged 19, b 1832, Solicitor's Articled clerk b Bangor, named as grandson (of Elizabeth Hughes). Mary Ann was born at Capel Curig c 1807.
In 1858, John Robert Griffith married Mary Blackwall and by the 1861 census they were living at Braver Grove (sp?) (Beaver Grove - RE), Garth Garmon, with daughter Frances Mary Griffith and son Thomas Blackwall Griffith. On the 1871 census they are living at Brynderwen, with a further 6 children, John William Griffith, Arthur Ernest Griffith, Walter Wynne Griffith, Frederick Ashley Griffith, Ethel (also recorded on future censuses as Edith) Louisa Grifith and Catharine Maud Griffith.
John Robert Griffith was a Solicitor in 1861 and an Attorney Solicitor by 1871, and I am wondering if anyone might know how I could find out where his practice was. At least 2 of his sons went on to become a solicitor and a barrister, having been sent to school at Beaumaris Grammar School.
I am keen to find out more about the Griffith family, for example whether Mary Ann was actually John Robert's mother, as she is recorded as being unmarried on the 1851 census. It has taken me quite a time to find her and it was a mourning ring with the following inscription that set me off on this journey of discovery:
'In memory of M.A.Griffith died 14th Jany 1854 aged 48'.
I had no idea who this person was, where they came from, or which part of Britain they lived in, and it is a mystery as to why my late mother had it among her possessions.
Looking on BMD threw up many M Griffith deaths for the 1st quarter of 1854, but having found 6 for M.A Griffith, the Llanrwst one seemed a possible link with my family in North Wales. The Registrar at Llandudno was able to confirm that the death date was the same as on the ring, and I was thrilled to have at last found the person it commemorated.
I believe that generally mourning rings were given to family members or friends, and would probably indicate that the family were comfortably off financially. It is in the shape of a buckle with a channel for a plait of the deceased's hair, but no hair remains.
If anyone could help me shed any light on this Griffith family or know more about this mourning ring, I would be very pleased if they could get in touch with me: jpmair @ tiscali.co.uk
I have enjoyed finding out about the Blackwall family from the Melin y Coed website and finding a picture of Brynderwen as a residential nursing home.
Thanks for any help, Judith Mair ( N. London)
For more developments in the research, see the Blackwall history on the Hendre House page.

Catherine Ann Jane Meredith - Cyffdy Hall Query.

Looking for news of her mother at Cyffdy is Mary Martini, who says:

'I was looking at your website and it is the first time I have seen Cyffty Hall. My Mother, who died in 2002 aged almost 83, used to live in the hall. She used to talk about the farm animals at the hall and farmlife. She lived there with her stepmother, and she told me her Father had gone off around the world. After that she lived in the Swallow Falls Hotel, I think with her stepmother. I am not sure what her stepmother's name was. I wonder could you help with any of this? My mother's name was Catherine Ann Jane Meredith. She had a brother called David who went into the army and was later captured by the Japanese.
I dont know if Daisy Jones could have been her stepmother. Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you
M Martini' (mail @ melin-y-coed.co.uk will be happy to forward information to Mary)

On our "Guest Book" page, Mr John Hogarth, who has an interest in history, says he is expecting to rent a cottage locally in September.
In the second half of August, Mr Anthony Francis of White Rock, BC Canada, hopes to solve some of the mysteries that he has been researching for years, most recently via the census transcriptions on this website. His ancestors lived at Bryn Sertan, Bryn Bras Bach and Graig Goch, Nebo, Hafod Garmon House, location as yet unknown, and other locations yet to be found. He says:

My mother’s grandparents were Owen & Margaret Roberts of Nebo, who got married aged 22 & 23 respectively on 16 May, 1868 at Llanrwst register office, in the presence of their respective fathers: Robert Roberts, a husbandman living at Bryn-Sertan Nebo, and John Jones, a joiner living at Graig-Goch Nebo, and two witnesses Owen Jones and Anne Jones.
My father’s grandparents were Robert Francis born 1852 at Rhewl, Llangollen and Anne Jones born 1850 at Llangollen, who were married in November 1876 at Llantysilio. Anne’s parents were the Reverend Hugh Jones, born 1821 and Ann Williams, born 1822 in Llanrwst parish, who were married in November 1842 at Capel Garmon. Their eldest child, Elias Jones born 1843? at Llangollen?, opened draper shops in Llanrwst & Llandudno and married perhaps, Jane Williams at Eglwysbach in 1870/2?
Anthony has been working on an extensive research paper, which we hope to present on this site when it has been corroborated and edited.

Also due back in Wales in July and August are Fronwen descendants Cai and Tiger Morris from Australia (Bethel), David Gwyn Owen from Tauranga, NZ, and Rowena Evans, also from Oz.

Sympathy to the family of Egryn Jones(above), formerly of Tyn Twll, Nant y Rhiw, and Maes Llydan, Capel Garmon, who passed away suddenly but peacefully aged 84 on Saturday, 27 December, 2008 and was laid to rest in Capel Garmon 19 January 2009.
Egryn's coffin was transported on a Victorian wheeled bier formerly used in Llanrwst in the funerals of the poor people of the town. This was pushed uphill from Seion to the church graveyard at Capel Garmon by the bearers. It was bitterly cold at Capel Garmon with threats of sleet and rain in the air but the weather held out just long enough for the funeral to end properly in a dignified manner before the weather turned really foul. (Thanks to Dafydd Jones for this information).
The Daily Post announced his death thus:

In the meantime, some of the connected correspondence and guest book contact has been posted on the page 'GUEST BOOK ARCHIVES' (Sorry - the actual guest book was closed down because of abuse by jolly jokers, but can be "accessed" by using our email address with Subject Header 'GUEST BOOK') Have a look at the Archives page to see stories unfolding as research is continued. Be assured that your own family history is also of interest to us here at MYC!
26 December: Newly edited photo just uploaded to page "Top People" (at bottom of page). This is of Maria Ann, Carreg y Fran, Siloam, 1915, from the collection of the late Margaret Jane Roberts of Siloam.
25 December: latest photos of MYC. These will be the last photos for the year - unless it snows!
Also, we hope to put up pictures of Howard's aerial 1999 photo with place names added in the next few days.
Otherwise - show's over for 2007, folks, see you in 2008!
18 December: Aerial photos of the village in 1999 taken by Howard have been uploaded to the page called "Bird's Eye View". See below for one of them.
More photos on MYC December as winter gets a grip.
16 December: New photo on this page (below) showing view of cottages and homes labelled, as seen from Cyffdy land.
Also photo update on Cyffdy renovations on Cyffdy Page.
13 Dec: more pictures on MYC December 2007 page.
9 December - New Page - Garth y Pigau.
New photos on MYC December page.
3 December - New page for new month - MYC December 2007 is now up - and our paparazzo - oops, photographer - has got his man - oops, bird. Yes, a buzzard which has eluded him for three years was so incautious as to sit still for a few seconds and is now preserved for MYC posterity.
